Nasi Lemak Edit page

From Singapore Hotels & Singapore Lifestyle

Nasi Lemak ('nasi' is Malay for rice) is a favorite breakfast item for most Singaporeans. It is actually rice cooked in coconut milk, making the rice slightly sweet and sticky. The rice for Nasi Lemak is cooked with pandan leaves to give it great aroma. And this is the reason why the rice is slightly green in color. There are two versions of Nasi Lemak in Singapore, the Chinese Version and Malay Version.

For the Malay version, it is usually served with fried and crispy ikan bilis with peanuts, hard boiled eggs, slices of cucumber or fried beancurd.

As for the Chinese version, it is served with chicken drumstick, fried egg, ikan bilis with peanuts or many others depending on the stall you order from.

Be it Chinese or Malay version, what makes or breaks nasi lemak dish is the rice and the chilli. The rice should be soft and slightly sweet. And the chilli should go well with the rice. The chilli should be so nice that you can just eat it with rice alone.
