Lau Pa Sat

Lau Pa Sat, formerly the old Telok Ayer Market, stands out distinctively in the Central Business District (CBD)'s maze of steel and glass. Dating back to 1822, and housed in a majestic colonial structure, it's been substantially modernised.
This Victorian octagonal-shaped structure was built from cast iron in Glasgow and shipped in 1894 to Singapore where it was reassembled on the waterfront. The structure was given a massive facelift in 1986 and turned into a Food Centre.
Lau Pa Sat has good food and some 24-hour stalls which pull in the working lunch crowds and after-work evening crowds. During the day, it is packed with business people rushing to have their lunch from one of the dozens of excellent Hawker Stalls. In the evenings, Boon Tat Street bordering Lau Pa Sat is closed to traffic and converted into an alfresco dining area laid out with chairs and tables.
